Civil Litigation Support

A civil case is decided on the record behind it, and that record has to be built long before anyone stands up to argue it. Attorneys bring me in from both sides of civil matters — plaintiff and defense — when a file has gaps that only field work and records research can close. I'm Eugene Butler, a licensed Michigan private investigator based in Flint, and I handle the investigative half of a civil case: gathering the facts, documenting them cleanly, and delivering them in a form counsel can take into a courtroom.

Most of that work is unglamorous, and it's often what a case turns on. I reconstruct timelines — who was where, when, and what the paperwork says about it — so a sequence of events stops being an argument and becomes something you can lay on a table. I document scenes and premises — measurements, sight lines, lighting, surface conditions — photographed and filmed so they can be worked up into exhibits.

I run records research to test what a party is claiming and to surface what got left out of their account. And I organize the factual record into something counsel can actually use under deadline, instead of a box of unlabeled material nobody has time to sort. Where a matter needs a specialty — a hard-to-find witness, a lawful asset search, a judgment that has gone nowhere — I take that on as well, scoped to what the case genuinely calls for rather than bolted onto the bill.

I also handle service of process in Michigan, documented with a proof of service in the form the court expects, because service done carelessly hands the other side an easy problem to raise. When it comes time to prove any of it, I'll testify about what I found and how I found it, at deposition or at trial. That commitment shapes how I work every day: everything gets dated, sourced, and written down while it is fresh, because those notes are what I'll be questioned on under oath.

Material gathered loosely, or written up long after the fact, doesn't survive a careful cross-examination, and it drags the rest of the file down with it. Cost and limits deserve the same plain treatment. There's no flat number I can quote sight unseen — documenting a single scene is a small job, and carrying a complex file through months of trial preparation is not — so I scope the work with counsel first and say plainly what a given budget buys.
